Designed in homage to candlesticks made in Venice and later northern Europe from the 16th to the 17th centuries.

In 1868 Eastlake published Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and other Details, with multiple editions it was highly influential in Britain and later in the United States, where it was published in 1872. His impact on design and architecture is immeasurable, for example in the United States the Eastlake movement is named after him.
