The first metal watering cans appeared in the late 17th century after Lord Timothy George wrote the term watering can in his garden diary in 1692. Cans such as this were usually made of copper but lighter materials such as zinc or tin plate became the more practical choice in the 19th century. It is most likely this originally had a rose head to the spout.
